Panel: Cultural competence from theory to practice

In 2009, we examined cultural competence in Victoria.

  • What does a culturally competent health service look like?
  • What immediate steps and big-picture strategies can we take to improve cultural competence?

The Victorian Department of Health released its Cultural responsiveness framework and Western Region Health Centre became the first Victorian health service to undertake an external cultural competence review. A panel discussion was held to share these developments and their implications for health services.

Panellists

Lindy Marlow, Western Region Health Centre
Lindy was the cultural competence facilitator at Western Region Health Centre. She discussed why the centre commissioned an external review and what it means for planning, service delivery and staff development.

Pamela Rodriguez, Centre for Culture, Ethnicity & Health
CEH has assisted health services throughout Victoria to build their cultural competence. Pamela was the manager of the Health Sector Development team.

Lidia Horvat, Department of Health
The Victorian Department of Health released its Cultural responsiveness framework which outlines key standards for government-funded health services. Lidia explained how the framework would assist hospitals to provide inclusive and patient-centred care.
