Here is
some information about two common sexual health problems that women may
experience.
If you want
to know more, call our MHSS community workers and they will give you
free and confidential support.
bacterial vaginosis
If you
notice an unpleasant odour or discharge from your vagina, you may have
bacterial vaginosis.
A healthy
vagina contains many different types of bacteria, but sometimes the balance of
these bacteria can be disrupted. This can happen for many reasons, including
irritation from washing the vagina with soap or lotions, after a change of
sexual partner, or after increased sexual activity.
If
bacterial vaginosis is not treated, it can cause complications such as pelvic
inflammatory disease, miscarriage or premature delivery.
Testing for
bacterial vaginosis is quick and easy, and it is easily treated with treatment
or cream.

thrush
Women can
develop thrush, which is a fungal infection in the vagina. Symptoms of thrush
include itchiness, unusual discharge, or redness and swelling of the vagina.
Thrush can
occur for many reasons, including diabetes, sexual activity or a change in
diet.
Testing for
thrush is done by a swab sample and it is easily treated with antifungal cream.
