Language services

Doctor, patient and interpreterLanguage services are a critical component of a rights-based approach to health care.

It is now widely accepted that providing high-quality language services results in benefits for both clients and practitioners including increased access to health services, improved quality of care, and better health outcomes.

The growing use of language services has resulted in a set of unique challenges, including:

  • How can available services keep up with increasing demand, especially in rural and regional areas?
  • What professional development and support do language service professionals need?
  • What standards and resources are needed to enable the utilisation of bilingual workers?

The Language Services stream will provide the opportunity for language service providers, health practitioners, multicultural agencies and policy makers to engage in robust discussion about current practice and the future of language services in Australia.
