Presented by conference keynote speaker Mark Johnson, this masterclass will examine recent evidence on the validity and applicability of diagnostic instruments and 'quality of life' measures commonly used to support the management of patients.
Screening tools such as the 'Mini-Mental State Examination' or SF36 are often used to assess a patient's state of mind or to measure improvements in quality of life following healthcare interventions. These tools may be based on subtle assumptions about concepts, values and even language, and fail to work when translated or used with people from differing cultural backgrounds.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own 'tools' or questionnaires used for such purposes. We will engage in an interactive discussion on what we are trying to measure, and how we can be sure that the words and concepts hold the same meaning for our patients.
