International and Australian experts go head to head on multicultural health

Tuesday 30 March, 2010

Early bird tickets are now on sale for the Diversity in Health 2010 Conference, which includes an impressive line-up of international researchers and Australian health experts.

Keynote speakers include Professor Mark Johnson (UK), Sharon E. Barrett (US), Dr Tim Woodruff, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, Nira Yuval-Davis (UK), the Hon Daniel Andrews, Graeme Innes, Janine Robinson (Canada), Andrew Jakubowicz, Voula Messimeri-Kianidis, Pino Migliorino and many others.

The conference opens with UK-based Professor Mark Johnson discussing the concept of ‘cultural integrity in service delivery' with Dr Tim Woodruff, President of the Doctors Reform Society.

The first day ends with a controversial debate ‘Is multicultural health a reality or just a bandwagon for the politically correct with a soft spot for foreigners?'. Experts from Australia and overseas search for the truth through humour, wit and persuasive argument.

The following day, Sharon Barrett of the US agency Association of Clinicians for the Underserved will speak about improving health literacy, as part of a broader discussion on the right to health in Australia. Later that day, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal of the National eHealth Transition Authority will join Health Services Commissioner Beth Wilson and other experts in a hypothetical on the impact of eHealth for disadvantaged communities.

Modern multiculturalism is scrutinised on the final day, when a panel of national and international commentators explore the challenges of maintaining a modern and inclusive society. Panellists include Nira Yuval-Davis of the University of East London, Andrew Jakubowicz and Juliana Nkrumah from the Institute for Cultural Diversity.

In addition to the keynote addresses, the conference will feature specialist sessions on aged care, mental health, family violence prevention, problem gambling, language services, sexual health, refugee health and cultural rights, plus more than 200 paper presentations.

Diversity in Health 2010 will be held from 7-9 June at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
